Module 5 • Staffing your business
Activity 2 1. Draw up a detailed CV for yourself. 2. Compile a list of tips or guidelines that will assist job seekers when they go for interviews.
• Tests
Selection tests can be done before or after the interview. Tests are generally done for two reasons. Firstly it can be used to determine what department of a large organisation an inexperienced applicant will fit into. It can also be used to test the skills of an applicant who has applied for a specific job. There are different types of test for these purposes: – Aptitude tests test an applicant’s potential (IQ tests). – Trade tests measure an applicant’s ability to master a specific skill (welding or typing).
– Personality tests can indicate how a person will handle a specific work situation (responsibility, emotional maturity).
– Interest tests give an indication of an applicant’s interests.
• Approval by supervisor
In larger organisations the supervisor or senior of the new employee is invited to sit in when the interview takes place. The supervisor knows which qualities are needed to perform the job effectively and therefore his or her input can be very valuable when the final selection takes place.
• Physical examination A physical examination is an important part of the selection process for the following reasons: – It provides assurance that the applicant will be a productive member of the business. – It will ensure that the applicant is physically and mentally fit to fulfil the requirements of a
specific job.
– It provides a basis for comparison for later physical examinations. – It provides additional information about the applicant that may be useful in the selection process.
• Induction or orientation When you have selected a suitable candidate for the vacant post, you must place that person in a specific position in your business. Induction or orientation is now of the utmost importance to make the new employee feel at home in the business. Induction in a business is the process through which new employees are introduced to their tasks, superiors, work group and the business as a whole.
In a small business this will be mainly the task of the manager. You must help to make the employee feel part of the business as soon as possible. He or she must associate him or herself with the goals of the business and develop a positive attitude towards his or her new job.
DID YOU KNOW
Medical information is obtained through health questionnaires that can be completed by the applicant or his/her doctor or through a formal medical examination by a doctor.
