The point is made that if you really listen, people are able to influence you. And allowing people to influence you, is the key to influencing others. Understanding people also leads to appreciating them. The positive outcome of such an approach is evident. A few advantages are:
• You are less judgmental • Differences are not always seen negatively • You are open for a better suggestion • It creates an equal footing • New ways of doing things are found.
3.2.6 Synergy (teamwork)
Synergy relates to your interaction with other people. It builds on the win/win approach and the habit of a genuine commitment to understanding the other person. It means that you involve other people in your activities. For example, if two people are working on an assignment and they mutually discuss issues, come up with new ideas, etc., they will stimulate each other, and their creative ability will be used extensively.

Synergy is achieved when the combined efforts of individuals are far better than the sum of individual contribution.
On the other hand, if you divide the assignment into two separate sections, your friends have to work on them individually. When everything is completed, the sections are simply added together. The result will be inferior to the assignment of the two people who really worked together. The habit of synergy means that you can achieve a lot more if you allow your workers, family, colleagues etc. to make inputs where applicable. They become part of the solutions, which are superior in most instances.
An example of where to apply synergy is when you communicate – open your mind and do not adopt a judgmental approach or jump to conclusions. This could open the way for new options, methods alternatives, suggestions and possibilities. This is a very valuable tool in business, where a competitive edge over other businesses is of vital importance.
The habits of win/win, the other point of view and synergy relate to our interaction with people. As mentioned earlier, it can also be called public victories if we are successful in applying these habits. The benefit is that we will extend our circle of influence, should achieve a lot more and become less of a victim of circumstances.
3.2.7 Personal motivation – Sharpening your saw
The seventh habit is the most important one because it focuses on you as an individual. If you are not happy (balanced) within yourself, you’ll find it very difficult to interact successfully with other people. Furthermore, how can you expect to influence other people positively if you view yourself in a negative manner?
The story is told of someone who was walking in a forest. In front of him he saw someone who was cutting down a tree. The person was really struggling and sweating. His reply to a question of how long he had been busy, was: “Three hours.” The logical suggestion was to sharpen his saw so that it could go a lot faster. His answer to that was, “ I do not have the time for that!”
