Module 1 • Personal management

Activity 1 (Contd) in charge; the workers knew exactly what to do, their tools were appropriate and they were enjoying their work. There was even a well- stocked medical aid kit.

One of the workers suddenly studied the different railway lines and realised that they were working on the wrong line. The response from the manager was, “Shut-up, we are making progress!”

Questions: 1. Describe the potential dangers that this team of workers were facing. 2. Compare the worker and manager with each other. Who was best performing a management role and who is the better leader?

Conclusion

The difference between the two concepts has important implications for the small businessperson. Yes, you must be both, which means that apart from managing the day-to-day activities of the business, you must constantly show direction. Taking note of what is happening in the different business environments is an important part of showing direction.

The message is that no management success can compensate for failure in leadership. However, leadership is difficult since we often fear change. It could cost money or, even worse, we could be so caught up in the management function that we don’t even notice the changes around us.

Activity 2 Read the article below and answer the questions that follow:

Yes we Can! Obama’s Inauguration speech!

On a day of jubilation and symbolism played out to a stunning crowd of two million on Washington’s National Mall, Barack Obama took the oath of office on a Bible that belonged to Abraham Lincoln, the 19th century president who abolished slavery.

Claiming his place in history as America’s first black president, Barack Obama told his nation to dust itself off and brave the “icy currents” and “storms” of its multiple crises.

“We have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord,” Barack Obama (47) said in a sombre inaugural address which took sharp issue with the two-term Republican presidency of George W. Bush.

“Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real, they are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily, or in a short span of time. But know this, America – they will be met.”

DID YOU KNOW

Management is about doing “the things right” while leadership is about doing “the right things”.
