Module 1 • Personal management Reactive language
There’s nothing I can do; That’s the way I am; He makes me so mad; They won’t allow that; I have to do that; I can’t; I must; If only Why me?
Proactive language
Let’s look at alternatives; I can choose a different approach; I can control my own feelings; I can create an effective presentation; I will choose an appropriate response; I choose; I prefer; I will; Yes we can!
Cultivating the habit of being proactive, suggests that you must accept responsibility for your own life. If you do this, it means that you are starting to take action and to influence other people. For example, you can choose to involve yourself in unlawful activities, but someone else will determine the consequences. Therefore make sure that your actions reflect the norms of society and that you are contributing positively towards this society.
Activity 4
In pairs, do the following: 1. Make a list of at least five things that really upsets you or affects your life in a negative way. It can be people, an event, a happening or anything that you feel is just not fair!
2. Allocate one key word from the reactive column to each of these items that you listed. 3. It is now compulsory to add one key word from the proactive column to this very same list. 4. List one emotion that you felt when you wrote the proactive key words next to each item on your list.
5. Did this in any way change the way you looked at your problems? Write your answer next to each item on your list.
3.2.2 Beginning with the end in mind
Once you have decided that you can make a difference to your own situation, it becomes important to decide where you are going to, or what you would like to achieve. If you don’t do this you won’t know whether you have arrived or achieved your goal. Before you go on a trip, you first decide where you are going to go. Once you have determined that, your choice of transportation is a lot easier.
All things are created twice. The first time is in our minds, and the second is “when you do it” in other words, the real thing! Therefore, a leader involves him/herself more with the first creation and the manager with the second. You have to do both. You have to begin with the end in mind. The fact that you are studying means that you are on your way somewhere. But do you know where that is? Maybe you know or have a good gut feeling about it. Maybe it is time that you become more specific about it.
PAUSE FOR THOUGHT
You can choose your actions but not their outcome or consequences. These are determined by your choice of action.
