Class Discussion The Rhino – under attack!

The Rhino is part of South Africa’s rich wild life heritage and known globally as one of the “Big Five”! Our tourism industry depends on our wildlife heritage and is one of the major employment creation sectors in the South African economy.

But the Rhino is under serious threat. They are hunted down mercilessly for their horns. In the Far East and China, the Rhino Horn is mistakenly used as an Aphrodisiac or for Medicinal purposes.

Amongst many other studies, an ecologist Raj Amin of the Zoological Society of London have after studying the elements of a Rhino Horn concluded that there isn’t much evidence to support the plethora of claims about the healing and other properties of the Rhino horn. It concluded that you’d do just as well chewing on your fingernails.

A decade ago South Africa, home to more than 20,000 rhinos, was losing about 15 animals a year to poachers. But poaching has increased dramatically since about 2007 – see the diagram.

The South African Government has now taken some drastic decisions to save our Rhino. Massive prison sentences are now the norm and in response to 25-year sentences handed to the three rhino poachers by the Phalaborwa Regional the Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa, said that she believes the court sentence will send

a strong message and hopefully act as a deterrent to poachers and would-be poachers.

Discussion questions: 1. Which business environment does this case study relate to? 2. What types of business the Rhino poaching already affects and what implications does this have for the SA economy?

3. Why else should we fight for the survival of the Rhino? 4. How do you think can we win this war against Rhino poachers? 5. What can you, (each one of us) to do to help save the Rhino?

4. Managerial decision-making

A decision is the selection of a course of action given two or more alternatives. Managers are normally the ones who should take the decisions. They are, however, often hesitant to do that. The reason is that decisions are about the future and the outcome is not always that clear. The strategic planning process is all about decisions regarding the future of your business.
