Activity 14 1. The benefits of habits 4, 5 and 6 should be very obvious in teamwork. In a small group, identify at least 2 benefits per habit and write them down.
2. Compare your habits with that of other groups and compile a combined list. 3. Which of these three habits helped you most with this activity?
Team building exercises
The primary objective of team building is to increase the effectiveness of working as a team. It also helps to improve interpersonal skills, problem solving and a team spirit. However, the ultimate aim is to create synergy. (Do you remember the concept?)
A few methods are: • arranging joint social events • watching sport together • competing in sporting activities, such as inter-company relays or Action Cricket • attending a workshop where everyone will benefit
Group dynamics
Whenever a group is formed for whatever purpose, certain dynamics develop within that group. Individuals accept different roles. The same individual might accept a different role in another group depending on the composition of that group. This is why great care should be taken in the selection of a specific group where possible. Individuals must complement each other, otherwise the group can become very destructive.
For example, there are individuals who encourage others to participate, who speak for the group’s needs, who seek ways to keep communication open and resolve conflicts, who offer compromises and check that procedures are being adhered to properly. Unfortunately, there are roles that other individuals may display that will impede the group’s progress such as criticising others, stubbornly sticking to their own ideas, dominating the process or withdrawing altogether.
Within a group discussion or even within your business team, you will experience the different roles that people play. Look out for the following roles. Suggestions on how to deal with them are offered. Can you come up with a few others?
Group work – are there individuals who: • •
draw upon their past experiences encourage full participation
encourage the group to determine their goals and plan the agenda relate the group activities to their goals
• help them to focus “real world” problems • •
• allow debate and challenge of ideas • Listen and respect the opinions of group members? •
Encourage members to share resources with each other?
• The dominator or excessive talker – Establish a procedure whereby each person contributes one idea and must then wait until everyone else has had a chance.
– Interrupt such a person and ask him/her to summarise. – Say: “Thank you for all those ideas. Let’s now hear from the other members in the group.”
