2.2 Matrix organisational structure


The matrix organisational structure is, strictly speaking, a combination of departmentation and the flat organisational structure. The different departments such as production and finance still exist, but project teams are formed according to the knowledge and skills required for a specific project. This takes place regardless of which department a worker is working in. Such a group of workers then performs a variety of tasks. Once the project is completed, the team ceases to exist. The implication of this is that a specific worker might report to two different managers at the same time. This is not always advisable. A matrix structure is more likely to be found in larger businesses.

The flat organisational structure has relatively few layers of management. The aim is to soften the hierarchy of authority, meaning that all workers and managers interact regularly.
