N5 Entrepreneurship 1. Introduction
Questions arise, such as: • “How do I balance personal and professional areas of life in the middle of constant crises, changes and pressure?”
• “How can I be genuinely happy at the successes and competence of other people?” • “What are the really important things in my life?”
When people start talking about their work, their families and what is important to them, one often gets the impression that something is missing. It seems that most people are good at one aspect of their lives, while neglecting everything else.
This means that we find it difficult to lead a balanced life with a sense of direction. This is even truer for the small businessperson that has to spend long hours working towards the success of a business. They find it difficult to manage themselves, their business and all their other responsibilities.
Striking a balance is of vital importance, because success within a business will only become a reality if you are successful within yourself. Your business is only a part of your life. There are other as important roles that you need to fulfil as well. This module is aimed at providing small business persons with skills, methods and tools (habits), enabling them not only to make a success of their business, but of their lives as a whole.
2. Management and leadership
The difference between the two concepts is important because most of us tend to confuse the two and use them interchangeably without clarification. But why differentiate? Leadership is not management
Leadership is the so-called “first creation” and deals with issues such as the things that you want to accomplish. Management is the “second creation” and refers to questions such as the best method of accomplishing these things. The difference should be clearer now. Management means that you already know what must be done, achieved, created, manufactured etc. You are only looking for the best people, methods, equipment and techniques to accomplish what was determined by the leadership function.
DEFINITION
Leadership is the ability of an individual to obtain the support and action of people to achieve a common goal.
Our country was blessed with exceptional leaders who provided exemplary leadership during a very difficult time. Think of what President Nelson Mandela achieved in his lifetime and how he went about achieving it.
The importance of the difference between the two is best explained by the following situation: Activity 1
