4.4 Techniques


A few techniques are suggested to develop alternative solutions and stimulate creativeness. They might help you in your decision-making process. These methods are designed to generate a richness of ideas and not a “rightness.” It seeks to open up new ways of thinking and force you to explore the least likely. There are no rights and wrongs during the process; success comes by means of superior solutions and not from prescribing what is correct.


Generation of alternatives This method implies that any particular way of looking at things is only one of many other possible ways. You should exploit other ways before you jump to a conclusion. In order to force yourself to come up with a number of ways, set yourself a quota before you start.

1. How would you describe the figure? – Two overlapping rectangles? – Three rectangles? – Two L-shapes embracing a gap? – A rectangle divided into halves with the two pieces pushed out of line?


2. Find at least nine different ways of dividing a square into four or more equal sized sub units.


3. Find a picture and describe what is happening in that picture. Describe three different things that could be happening in that picture.


Reverse method


Sometimes when you are faced with a problem, it is difficult to ever get started. It is like a wall in front of you. Do what the swimmers do when they are swimming more than one length; kick hard against the wall to gain speed in the opposite direction. In the reverse method you take things as they are and then turn them around, inside out, upside down, back to front. Then you will see what happens. For example: policemen organise the traffic. If you reverse it, then it might be: • The traffic organises (controls) the policemen. • The policemen disrupt the traffic.
