This section refers to the different management styles of managers and whether that affects the motivation of employees. Likert researched this and identified four management styles. He indicated that certain styles are more conducive towards motivation. They are:
Needless to say that the last two management styles will contribute more to the level of motivation of your workforce than the first two
IMPORTANT
The three types of motivational theories should be seen as contributors to the initial question of how to motivate an employee. Circumstances and people will dictate which approach will be appropriate at a given point in time.
DO • recognise that people are different • try to understand their individual needs • develop satisfying jobs • make the job interesting and challenging • let employees participate in setting performance standards • ensure prompt feedback • provide positive reinforcement when standards are met
DON’T • neglect hygiene factors • give only negative reinforcement

Compensation
Remuneration is the compensation that an employee receives for his labour. This is one of the major expenses in any business. The manager of a small business has the responsibility to determine the salaries and wages of his employees. These salaries must be enough to motivate them to perform well, but low enough for the business to afford them.
5.1 Compiling a salary package
• Determining a specific wage level Factors that influence the determination of salaries and wages: – Legislation: Minimum wage agreements between trade unions and employers and the Wage Act in certain industries
– What the business can afford – Labour demand and supply – if the supply is high the wage levels may drop – Cost of living: During periods of high inflation, the consequences are serious for employers and employees
