• The withdrawn or shy person – Talk to the person privately and find out how he/she feels about the issue. Ask the person to share this in the group, since it will make a positive contribution.


– Direct questions to a particular person when you know he or she has experience or ideas on the subject.


• The avoider/sidestepper – Do not allow conflicts to remain unsolved. – Direct questions and tasks to and expect responses to ensure that the person stays involved. – Talk privately to the person and find out what’s happening.


• The degrader – One of your ground rules must be that all ideas and contributions are welcome. Re-enforce this rule, in private if necessary, when it is violated.


– Confront the degrader with: “You may have a point, but we need to solve our problem.”


• The uncooperative – Encourage the person to explain reasons behind his/her objections. – Refocus his/her participation as a recorder or process observer.


• The side conversationalist – Stop doing what you are busy with and ask those who are involved to share their side conversation with the rest of the group.


– Stop the meeting and comment that it is difficult for you to hear the other discussion or concentrate on the topic at hand.
