Layout of the toddler section
Make sure all appliances are safe. No bar heaters near children. All wiring is correctly done. Electrical appliances are not near water. No electrical cord is long enough for a child to immerse it in liquid.
1.1.7 Doors and gates
Te correct placement of doors and gates, the aim of doors and gates, the influence of temperature, the use of doors and gates (security aspect)
Doors and gates also influence the temperature. For example, the changing area cannot be placed next to the door, because there may be a draught every time somebody opens the door.
Having doors with hooks or padded, long cushions hooked onto the handles will help to prevent small fingers being hurt.
Doors should not open out, but in. If glass is used, it must be safety glass. Te aim of doors and gates is to allow traffic into and out of the area. Tey are not for children to hang on or to swing on. Place door handles at a low level on the doors where toddlers may use the door. Security doors are necessary for the safety of the children and staff. Use them correctly. Keep them locked!!
1.1.8 Wall coverings
Walls can be painted or wallpapered. Tey must be washable, therefore use enamel paint or plastic – covered wallpaper. Refer to colours depending on the needs. Pictures can be painted on the walls for extra interest and stimulation.
Textured wallpaper will encourage the child to feel the walls. Te walls may become dirty from their hands. Textured wallpaper, if plasticised, is preferable to a smooth finish.
1.1.9 Curtains
Curtains should be made of a washable material. Be sure that the curtains are attractive and add to the environment. Curtains should be drawn back to allow maximum light from the window. Tey could be thick to keep the cold out at night.
Curtains should not be near open flames or in a position to catch fire. Children must not be allowed to climb up or play with curtains.
1.1.10 Flooring
It is recommended to use different kinds of flooring so as to have a variety of textures. Toddlers spend a lot of time on the floor so it is important to think of the needs of the child and which activity will take place.
Keep the following in mind when choosing flooring. It should be: easy wearing easy to keep clean comfortable to play on capable to withstand accidents, e.g. vomiting capable of withstanding hard wear, e.g. playing with toys on it. Remember the influence of the colour on the room and the children.
