2.7 How to present rhymes/verse effectively to children
1. Rhymes and verse can be presented throughout the day at any time, e.g. even at hand washing time: “Tis little hand is a good little hand”: Tis little hand is a good little hand, And this little hand is his brother. Together they wash and they wash, Te one hand washes the other.
2. Rhymes and verse can be initiated by the children, but most oſten the educarer starts saying a rhyme or verse.
3. Rhymes and verse are not learned line by line. Te educarer will say the rhyme or verse a few times and encourage the children to participate.
4. She must listen to what the children say and correct any word/words that are incorrect. 5. Praise and encourage the children for trying and they will want to say the rhymes and verses oſten.
3. Planning and organisation of the book corner
Introduction A book corner in the play-room gives the young child an opportunity to relate to books.
Organisation of the book corner a) Te area must be in a quiet part of the playroom, not near the sensophatic area (sand/water play) or where the creative activities are done.
b) Te children must immediately be able to see what books are available and be able to handle the books themselves. A bookshelf, in which the books are arranged at the children’s eye-level, is required.
c) Te book exhibition must look inviting. d) No broken or damaged books should be displayed here. e) A soſt carpet and colourful cushions on the floor offer the children comfortable seating. f) A big area is not needed, because the children will not move around much. g) Te corner can be created by moving some cupboards. h) A poster of children looking through books could be used on the wall as decoration. Pictures of the theme of the week can be used to decorate the area.
i) Te books provided should be suitable for the specific age group. j) Books which the educarer has used to tell stories to the children should also be displayed in the book corner. Children enjoy looking through these books and may even “tell” another child the story.
k) Te books should be alternated regularly. l) Do not exhibit too many books. m) Only a certain number of children should be allowed in the corner at the same time. It should not be overcrowded.
3.1 Storage and handling of books
a) Books may be kept in a central store-room, where the educarer withdraws the books she wants to use in the book corner.
