Activities for toddlers
e.g. Jane says: “Fwowa” and points to the flower. “Yes, pretty flower.” Accept the way the toddler says the word. But you should try to say your words clearly.
Try and vary your voice when you talk. Some words can be said louder, some soſter. Some can be said in a high voice, some in a low voice.
12. Anywhere/any time – language activity aids
As you cook … Talk about what you are doing. “First I’ll peel the carrots, and then I’ll slice them. Am I making the slices as thin as I can? Would you like a slice to taste?”
As you dress the child or he dresses himself Talk to the child about his clothes. “What colour sweater do you want to wear? Your red sweater or your blue sweater?” “Put your arm through here. What’s this part called? “Te sleeve.” “Yes, put your arm through the sleeve.”
At washing time Name each part of the body as you help the child wash. “Scrub one knee. What am I scrubbing?” “My knee!” “Yes, I’m scrubbing your knee. And what’s this funny thing at the end of your leg?” “A foot!” “Yes, a foot. Your right foot. Scrub one foot.”

Listen to recommendations regarding suitable books for the child’s level of development. Encourage the child to talk about events. Play language games with the child. Write down the child’s ideas, e.g. in a letter from the child to a grandparent. Buy books for the child. Teach the child to treat books with respect.
