C. Clean-up 1. Clean-up from these activities takes quite a while, so begin early enough that the children have time to help too.


2. Sponge off aprons and anything else that needs it. 3. Replace leſtover ingredients in containers. Clay must be stored in tightly closed containers. Make a depression in each large ball of clay with your thumb and fill with water.


Collage Collage is particularly useful because it fosters an appreciation of the way different materials look when arranged together. It also provides opportunities for making choices and a wide variety of materials, which may range from cotton balls to shells and wood shavings. Also included might be bright bits of ribbon and yarn, coarse netting, sponge, tin foil, corks and packing material. Using natural materials in this kind of work adds potential beauty and interest to the activity.


For example, shells, seaweed, and sand are nice to use as collage ingredients aſter a trip to the beach. Te educarer should remember that the intent is not to have the child make a picture of where she has been or copy what the educarer has made; the aim is to encourage the appreciation of contrast in texture and colour and foster pleasure in creating a design based on these differences.


Allow the child to choose the materials for the collage.


Water and sand play All children enjoy water and sand play. Water and sand are natural playthings, and so are their variations–mud, clay, etc.


Te value of water and sand play  Te water and sand are open media – no demands are made on the young child but it entices the child to explore and discover.


 Water and sand play are success-guaranteed experiences. Whatever the child does with it, it gives him a sense of satisfaction, even if he merely sits in it.


 It is especially the young child’s sense of touch and movement that is involved in water and sand play.


 Water and sand lend themselves to mathematical discoveries. (Volume, mass, differences, similarities, weight, ratio.)


 Because water and sand are media which make no demands on the child, the young child feels safe and secure.


 Water and sand encourage the children to fantasy play.  Water and sand make an important contribution to the social development of the child – they learn to get along with one another, to share and to be considerate.


 Te following development takes place: – language – eye-hand co-ordination – visual discrimination, memory and association – tactile perception – self-image – creativeness.


 Water play: – It has a calming and relaxing influence on the children. – It provides useful learning experiences, e.g. driſt/sink, volume, movement, splash, wet, cold/ warm, pouring, running, empty/full, bubbles, reflections, rainbow.
