Activities for toddlers


b) Te educarer helps the child be aware of how music is made up of sounds and silences by stopping and starting the music/song.


c) Let the child conduct the percussion group at times. d) Encourage all the children to play a percussion instrument. e) Encourage the children to express the mood of the music with their bodies in dance and drama. f) Get the children to tap on objects or on their bodies to indicate rhythm, loud and soſt, long and short, high or low.


g) Explore rhythm together, e.g. swaying a tambourine slowly while playing slow music, then faster for fast music.


h) Explore harmony. Divide the group and allow each group to sing a different section of the song – join all the voices together to experience harmony.


8.2.9 Parent involvement


a) Ask parents if they will help with music ring times. Tey could assist by singing or playing an instrument.


b) Invite a musical parent to the centre to play music for the children. c) Ask parents to assist you by making musical instruments.


Practical component 1. Evaluate the area and materials/aids suitable for music at a day-care centre. 2. Make suitable apparatus which could be used to make music.


9. Discovery activities What we mean by discovery.


Definition: Discovery means finding out and learning things. Toddlers learn and discover mainly through their own actions; by touching, tasting, smelling, feeling, listening to and experimenting with objects.


Te objectives of discovery activities We will be looking at discovery in three ways: – How toddlers learn what objects smell, feel, look and sound like. In other word how toddlers learn through their senses.


– How toddlers learn about the properties of objects (what they are like).


e.g. A ball is round and it bounces. A mirror shows a toddler’s reflection. He can see what he looks like. How toddlers need to experiment and find different ways of using and playing with objects.


e.g. A cup can be used to drink from. You can put something into a cup. If you turn it over, you can hide a smaller toy under the cup. You can balance a smaller cup on top of a large cup.


9.1 Value of discovery activities


1. Everyone, including a toddler, learns about the world through his own actions. It is important to encourage toddlers to explore and learn about the world.
