Module 4 4.1 Theme teaching


Why must you teach according to theme?  It presents to the child, a specific idea.  It enables the educarer to focus her thoughts and plan her activities in an organised way.


 New words and ideas are introduced to the child.  Te educarer can get certain ideas across to the children.  It makes the educarer’s planning of her work easier.  Tings can be organised into categories and groups.  Te possibility of giving the same information to the children every year can be avoided.


 All the educarers in the centre can work together.  It makes the daily programme more interesting.  One can plan outings and visitors to the centre ahead of time.


 It gives structure and direction to the way in which we have to do our planning.  It is easier to strengthen concept learning.


If we look at the above mentioned facts one can see that it is possible to plan our creative activities to work according to the theme. In this way we will be able to let the children understand words and concepts they previously did not understand. When doing this planning the educarer must make sure that she plans interesting activities for the children to do. Te educarers must work together so that a child do not do an activity two years in a row. Te child’s developmental level must be kept in mind when planning these activities.


4.2 Integrating art techniques and ideas


Art can be used very effectively as stimulus for creativity and free expression. When reading a story to the children, the story might encourage them to creativity. Exhibiting original art works of famous artists might also lead to creativity.


Playing music to the children will also help them feel creative. Te children need a little encouragement and a lot of enthusiasm from the educarer.


4.2.1 How to use art as a stimulus for creative and free expression


Creativity is nurtured by internal and external conditions. Te child needs to be open to experience and to a freshness of vision. He also needs to have the ability to experiment with ideas. Externally, the environment needs to provide the child with the freedom to be himself and to belief that he is unconditionally acceptable and accepted.


In each aspect of development a child needs four freedoms: 1. To think for himself 2. To do something his way 3. To ask questions 4. To make mistakes without fear of punishment or ridicule.
