5. Use a simple accompaniment with a guitar, or tape recorder. If you play the piano, use a few basic chord variations or a one-hand accompaniment since the melody should be recognisable.


6. Make certain all the teachers on your staff are familiar with the new song. 7. Use the new song oſten until the children know it. 8. Teach one song at a time. 9. Give the children opportunities to sing songs at other times during the day. Allow and encourage them to sing and play by taping their original songs or by echoing their chants when they sing.


8.2.7 Some aids for music activities


1. Records: You need – A record player, if possible this should be battery operated to avoid danger to toddlers. When not in use, it should be stored out of reach.


2. Tape recordings: You need – A tape recorder and tapes. A tape recorder is more useful than a record player. – You can make your own tape recordings of songs for toddlers. – You can sing to the toddlers and play them recordings. – You can have fun with toddlers by recording their voices and playing it back to them. – You can leave the recorder on while you have an activity (e.g. singing) and you can play the recording for parents at your meetings.


3. Singing: Most singing activities for toddlers include words (the song) and actions, e.g. “Clap handies, clap handies, till daddy comes home, and he will bring sweeties for baby alone”. Action songs can be done individually and in groups. Toddlers can join in and copy many of your actions. By the time a child is two years old, he should know several action songs.


4. Te “music box”: Your centre should have a “music box” in which you keep your equipment for noise-making or percussion play. You need – A cardboard or wooden box which can be decorated. Bought or handmade toys that can be used to make a variety of sounds.


e.g. Rattles and shakers. Drums. Whistles. Tambourines. Triangles. Many of these toys can be made.


8.2.8 Role of the educarer a) Plan your music activities with care, write down the new songs and skills to be taught.
