Module 4 4.1 Choice of music as learning activity
Content should be selected in a responsible manner, since it forms the basis of the interaction between the educarer and the pupil in every situation.
Criteria for selecting music activity content Learning content should have value for the child’s development. Learning content should correspond with the child’s interests, needs and ability.
Subject matter should give information. Tis means that the learning content should influence the course of the child’s development. Te choice of music as learning content, provides opportunities for learning new concepts, for auditory development, for the appreciation of the aesthetic aspect of music, as well as for discovering his own potential.
Learning content should reflect the life of the community. Te philosophy of life held by a specific community can be conveyed by means of music. In this way the child acquires knowledge which contributes to the forming of his identity.
Learning content should involve the child in totality. Learning content should represent reality. Te content of music is an aspect of the world of the child, as music is characteristic of man’s involvement in reality.
4.2 The structured content of music
Te structural elements of music applicable to music presentation in the pre-primary school are divided into two groups, according to Nye (1979:46). In the first instance the expressive elements determine how the music may be performed in terms of sound quality, tempo and dynamics. Secondly, the constituent elements of music refer to the composition of the content of music which comprises rhythm, melody, texture and form. None of the structural elements of music can function on its own, as all the elements are interdependent and interactive.
Te expressive elements are tempo, dynamics, sound and tone, crescendo/diminuendo and accent. 4.2.1 Description of the structural elements

A. Sound Music and sound go hand in hand, as the structural content of music is heard and described by means of sound.
Definition of Sound Vibrations cause sound and such vibrations can only become sound once they have been heard. Te differences in pitch between various sounds need to be heard and remembered before it becomes possible to produce language or speech.
