Module 2 3.2 Planning
It is necessary to have staff meetings every week to prepare for the following week. Preparation is very important to ensure success. At the weekly staff meeting, you should plan what group and individual activities you will have each day for the following week and which staff member will be responsible.
Written planning is important. Refer to the module on written planning. 3.3
Important things/factors to keep in mind when presenting activities for toddlers
1. Accept that individual children will differ in temperament and approach.
2. Sometimes it is necessary to demonstrate by playing with the toy yourself first.
3. Encourage new associations and combinations. 4. Encourage co-operation with others by showing delight at instances of sharing and playing with companions.
5. Listen to actual words and to more subtle types of communication, such as body language. 6. Put the accent on positive reinforcement. 7. Make sure that the child is comfortable. 8. Most times you should encourage toddlers to choose toys they like, but in special periods you should do the choosing for them.
9. Te transition from one activity to another is very important. Transition must take place very smoothly and the child must almost not be aware of it.
10. Do not force the child to do another activity when he is still interested in an activity. 11. Before presenting the activity, allow the child to experiment with the aids/apparatus. It will sometimes happen that the first day the child will only be interested in exploring the object on his own. Allow him to do so and do the activity the following day.
12. Talk to the child – not baby talk!! full sentences speak clearly keep quiet at the appropriate times to give him a chance to talk ask questions encourage the child to respond verbally.
13. Praise the child. 14. Be enthusiastic. 15. Be well prepared. 16. Be flexible. 17. Spend enough time on an activity. 18. Interaction with the child is very important. 19. It must be an enjoyable experience.
3.4 The role of the educarer in all activities
Te educarer should: Provide all the different activities at some time. Vary the activities from day to day, week to week. Keep records of the activities done – how, when, who. Provide much repetition so that the child gets enough practice and becomes familiar with the tasks.
