Although you do your weekly planning in advance, you must be willing to be flexible and to change your plans where needed. Always keep a few alternative plans ready if a crisis like rainy weather comes up. – Have at least 5 main activities which you can do. – Have at least 5 stories suited to your theme. – Have at least 1 rhyme and 1 song. – Have information ready.


Record keeping It is important to keep a record of what has been done with the children.


Te value of this includes:  You will know exactly what to do.  You will cover all aspects of the development of the child.  You can use all the planning and information that is written down, again.  You can add something new and discard the less successful planning.  You can supply a programme that is open to all possibilities of development.  It simplifies and eases your task.


3.5 Parent involvement


 NEWSLETTER: Inform the parents about the themes of the week and explain to them how they can also be involved. For example, sending pictures/books that link with the theme of the week, talking about the theme at home and asking the children questions about what they learned at the day-care centre.


 PARENTS’ MEETING: Explain to them what themes are, the values, how they are presented, etc.  CHILDREN’S WORK: Send home the creative activities that they have done around the theme.  OUTINGS: Ask parents to accompany you on an outing that links to the theme.  POSTERS: Make a poster every week that will inform the parents about the theme of the week.


3.6 Difference between a concept and a theme Te Oxford Dictionary describes it as follows: Teme: “A topic or subject of talk.” Concept:


“A generalised idea or notion.”


Concepts can be linked to themes. Concepts are abstract and themes are factual. Concepts will only be understood if they are explained in a simple way for the pre-schooler to understand.


Compare the themes on “concepts” and “themes” and write down any differences that you notice.


Practical component Use different themes and plan activities for three months.
