Decoration of the manipulative area Decoration of the manipulative area can include the pictures from the toys played in the area, e.g. stickle bricks, Lego, lazy constructor. Tese pictures give the children ideas about what they can try to build.


Activities that take place in the manipulative area In the manipulative play area are building, making, constructing, matching, sorting and counting. Tese activities are closely linked to science and maths and reading concepts. Te children also learn to play together and share.


Observing and evaluating in the manipulative area Look at the development of the child:  How well co-ordinated are the hands at building and balancing blocks?  Does he/she think creatively while playing?  How does he/she co-operate with other children?  Does he/she tidy away and can he/she match and sort while tidying?  Can he/she solve problems while playing or does he/she get angry or frustrated when he/she has a problem?


 What kind of language does he/she use and does he/she speak to the other children?  Does he/she understand concepts of size, shapes, colour and texture of the construction toys?


Quiet Area Tis is an area where books and perception toys and puzzles are available to the child.


Te book area: Tis should be in a quiet place in the playroom. It must be set up in such a way as to allow the children to see what it offers. Tere should be enough books (frequently rotated) and also cushions or tables and chairs for the children. Te book corner should look attractive to the children. It is desirable that the book corner should be separated from the rest of the playroom by the means of shelves or a screen. Tis will ensure that the children can read without being disturbed.


Te perception area: Tis area offers:  puzzles  card games that teach colours, shapes and numbers  objects to sort and match  beads for threading  board games.


Provide a table and chairs for the child to work at. Te games are displayed on shelves. Te aim of the quiet area is to provide an area where the children can work on their own or with friends. Tey learn through the games, looking at books, listening to stories. It is a peaceful place where children can enjoy peace and quiet and learning.


Decoration of the quiet area Decorate the quiet area with pictures that are peaceful and gentle. Te colours should be soſt and gentle. Te activities in the quiet area are stimulating and interesting. Children can become very excited by the books and games they are involved in.


Observing and evaluating in the quiet area Te educarer will see whether the children  can concentrate;
