Activities for toddlers
starts attending school, depends on the use of language. Not only must he be able to use language, he should also be able to understand it and interpret it correctly.
Every child who has normal hearing, speech and mental abilities has the inborn ability to learn a language.
Tis potential can, however, only be realised if the child has the opportunity to hear and use language. It is important for the educarer to provide additional activities for language development, such as speech games, poems and stories, apart from the usual chats she has with each child.
Te Educarer has a great responsibility to encourage language developments. Language activities must be within the child’s capabilities and she should know how language development takes place.
11.2 Language development
From an early age, the infant attempts to imitate sounds which he hears and much learning is based on imitation. Oſten the child repeats a word again and again to familiarise himself with the sound. Te child may imitate his educarer, parents or peers and in this way he builds up his passive and active vocabulary. Terefore the child’s models for imitation during language development must always be as accurate as possible.
Toddlers (1 – 3 years) At about the age of one, the toddler begins to recognise some words and will begin to utter his first meaningful words which are usually “mama”, “dada”, “baba” and “tata”. Even though he still mouths many meaningless words, this prattle serves a very important purpose, its rhythm and flow being an imitation of actual speech.
At a later stage, the toddler begins to combine two words, for example, “Teddy tata”. Gradually more and more words are combined, but all plurals, tense and connective words are omitted.
Regarding vocabulary, the one- to two-year-old understands the prepositions in, on and under. He can also carry out a simple command, for example, “Bring me your shoes.”
His speaking vocabulary consist of about 50 words (active vocabulary) which deal with the most important people and objects in his life. He also understands approximately 300 words (passive vocabulary).
Between the ages of two and three, the toddler’s vocabulary expands rapidly although his construction of sentences is still very incomplete. Te “what?” – type of question is associated with this age group (“What is this?”). Te negative form, “I don’t want to!”, is also typical of this period.
Te three-year-old uses from 800 to 1 000 words in his speech and understands about 1 500 words. 11.3 Value of language activity
11.3.1 Intellectual development – Te toddler’s language development develops the brain. – He learns words, sentences, concepts and understanding with language development. – Language activities develop listening skills and understanding instructions becomes easier for the child.
– Language activities encourage the child to look at books and pictures. – Te educarer helps toddlers learn more. “Te cow goes moo.” “Te tail goes swish.” Tey can learn the animal’s body parts: tail, legs, head, mouth, eyes, etc.
