Module 2 1. Think …


Of a beautiful bud – if it is in good soil, given the correct amount of water and the right amount of sunshine – what a beautiful flower it can develop into. Similarly, a child given the right amount of love, discipline, security, understanding, etc. can develop into a potentially wonderful person.


So we need to understand the development of the child.


It must be understood that children do not all have the same rate of development in the different areas. For example, a child may have advanced physical co-ordination for his age, but be slow with language and average with social development.


Te speed of development and the stages/steps always follow the same sequence – always going forward to higher levels of functioning.


New development levels occur when the necessary physical development in the nervous system and other parts of the body take place. When the new ability has suddenly been achieved, the child will have a practice period to master that ability. Te child needs time and patience from the educarer to perfect the skill he has acquired. Tis skill gets used as a part of his play. Aſter a time, his mind and energies are once again taken up by another new ability that has just appeared and he is off practising that instead.


We waste our time and the child is frustrated if we prevent him from practising a new ability. We will also waste our time, frustrate the child and ourselves, if we try to make him practise something before he has the ability to do so. Te same is true if we keep a child at a level and do not allow the possibility of development. When we say a child will not do his best, or try, it may be that he cannot yet do it, or that he could do it long ago and what we are offering has no interest for the child.


It is therefore very important to understand the developmental age of the child. With the true knowledge of the child’s development, the educarer will be well rewarded by the satisfaction that comes from knowing what the children are doing and where they are going.


Most of the problems educarers experience with toddlers is due to not understanding the child’s abilities and temperament. He won’t allow himself to be hurried and he will make an issue of small matters that you do not consider worthy of an argument.


Te toddler years have a lot in common with adolescence – the time between being a child and being an adult. Like a teenager, a toddler oſten shows aggression and frustration because he is caught between wanting to be independent and being dependent.


One day he will be capable of eating by himself and the following day he will refuse to eat and it seems as if he cannot hold the spoon. Sometimes he will fight to get dressed himself and he will cry if he cannot do it, but do not think that he will allow you to help him. When he is emotionally exhausted, he will accept your help.


Toddlers need specific guidelines and control, even if it seems as if they are fighting against it. Tey want to find out how far they can go.


At the end of this module, the educarer will be capable of presenting meaningful, stimulating and enjoyable activities to the toddler.
