10 Prepare and present a brief report on findings Once the researcher finished collecting, analysing and interpreting the data, a research report needs to be written. While many people may think that the report is a mere formality, the whole research process will fail if the report is inadequate.


Three major functions are served by the research report: • It organises data and serves as a record of the research. •


The same research findings can, in future, still have an influence on your business decisions.


• The quality of the report impacts on the quality of the research. Report format


The report should contain the following: • Title page (title and main theme of report) • Table of contents (list of main sections of report with page numbers) • A list of tables and figures • Proposal (research objectives and research plan) • Introduction (subject, purpose and plan of research) • Method followed (interviewing technique, description of questions) • Interpretation and findings • Conclusion • Recommendations (based on research findings – what action must be taken)


11 Presentation of information We are daily confronted with huge amounts of information. Some of this information we collect ourselves which means you need to know how to organise, interpret and present it to others. Not an easy task since numbers can be boring. People are only interested in what the information means for them and will only take note if they can understand it. Bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts and tables are all methods or tools to present data more visually, more interestingly, clearer and easier to read.


Below is an example of a bar graph explaining the population size of all nine provinces in South Africa.
