Module 2 • Creativity and idea generation
Activity 5
The following are problems (you may identify your own or use the list of needs): • Getting rid of crime in your area • Lack of fresh water in your residential area • Very expensive medicine • Electricity cuts or loadshedding.
Instructions: Form a small group to discuss the topics listed. By following the brainstorming guidelines, as well as the advice in the article to generate new business ideas from the problems that were identified, make sure you follow all then brainstorming steps.
3.2 “What if” or “why” questions
This method is about asking the “what if ” or “why” question all the time. Small children often do this best. They drive you crazy by continuously asking “why”. That is how they learn. Once you have an idea in mind, ask yourself “what if ” this happens or “what if ” they don’t do that. Maybe this will help you to think differently about what is happening around you.
Example: New development in an area:
Wifi and airtime is now part of our daily lives. Does that give you an idea? Try to use one of the methods to come up with a new idea, given the opportunities of electricity.
Problem: Many shacks receive an electrical board with one plug on it. This limits the use of electricity, especially when something such as a hot water cylinder is used. What now?
New idea! Maybe you can start a plumbing or an electrical business? 1. Is this something people need?
2. Is there a market for something like this?
3.3 Mind-mapping
Mind-mapping is like drawing a map of different, but related ideas. You write your idea, interest or problem in the middle of the page. Around it you write five related, but different new ideas of which the original idea reminds you. Again write ideas that are related to the previous five ideas. In other words, continue to branch out. Compare the different categories of ideas. Also, try to put two seemingly unrelated ideas together. Any new ideas?
Self actualisation
Status and self esteem needs Social needs
Security and safety needs Physiological needs
wifi This illustration is not true but it does highlight the changing world we live in.
