Human resources are the most important resources in a small business. It’s the workers who determine how well everything in your business is being done. Managing the people in your business well is very important while recruiting the right type of people is just as important.


Responsibilities towards workers include: • Creating a pleasant working environment • Adhering to labour legislation • Motivating your employees • Investing in their potential by training them • Paying them a fair salary • Being fair when it comes to disciplinary measures


When employing a worker, draw up a written agreement between you (your business), and your employee. The law is very prescriptive as far as service conditions are concerned. The Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) and the Labour Relations Act are legislation that regulates service conditions. Aspects such as working hours, leave, sick leave, dispute resolution procedures, disciplinary codes and strike actions are but a few aspects that are dealt with. Consulting these documents and implementing the conditions will protect you from industrial action.


Use a job description in your business to clarify what the worker must do. A job description is an organised factual statement of duties and responsibilities for a specific job. It should set out what is to be done, how it is done and why. The purpose of a job description as a legal document
