It is an amazing fact that every year thousands of South African families fly all the way to the United States of America to visit Disney World in Florida. What is remarkable is that there is a Disney World outside Paris, France, that is not only much closer, but is less expensive to get there.
Well, the reason lies in understanding that Disney World Florida is not just Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and friends;
it is a lot more than that. Of course, going all the way to Florida is a
good reason to take a holiday in the United States anyway, and many South African travellers find that a very attractive proposition.
Disney World is oſten confused with Te Magic Kingdom. Tis is what the original Disney theme park was called, but nowadays Te Magic Kingdom is part of the larger Disney World. Te Magic Kingdom is where you will find Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Snow White, and all the wonderful old Disney characters. In the kingdom are seven “lands” including, Tomorrowland, Main Street USA, Adventureland, and Mickey’s Starland. Te centrepiece of this wonderful world of make-believe is the famous, beautiful Cinderella Castle, known to millions of children throughout the world.
In the different lands you can take fantastic rides – into the underground caverns and beaches of Pirates of the Caribbean, a hectic ride through Tunder Mountain, an undersea adventure submarine, a climb into the Swiss Family Robinson’s treehouse, an encounter with a grotesque Alien – you’ll need at least three jampacked days to do all them all.
But there is a lot more to Disney World. It is a huge area of about 160 square kilometres, near to the airport at Orlando, at which many international flights arrive and depart. Inside the huge playground, connected by major roads that criss-cross the area connecting the different attractions, are many more theme parks, resorts, hotels and fascinating areas for tourists. However, many visitors stay outside the area at less expensive hotels which offer shuttle services to the attractions in Disney World.
Disney World has three main theme parks – Te Magic Kingdom, Epcot Centre and Disney- MGM Studios. Epcot is a light-hearted look at new ideas and out-of the world experiences. It also offers great rides but no Disney characters. It is more serious and educational, with trips through prehistoric jungles, into the ocean depths in search of its mysteries, visiting a city of the future, and a journey through the human body. And it is absolutely suitable for adults and children!
Disney-MGM is where you must meet your favourite movies face-to-face – and have a look at how they are made. Most of the newer Disney film characters are there – Aladdin, Beauty and Te Beast, the Little Mermaid. You can also see animators at work, creating the “cells” that eventually become part of the movie. Te rides here are adventures into favourite scenes of Disney’s great films.
But you are misguided if you think that, by the time you’ve visited the theme parks, you’ve wrapped up Disney World.
