Te beauty salon outside the bustling taxi rank in Diepkloof started out life as a shipping container. Soweto does its business as taxis screech outside in carbon monoxide clouds. And, outside the salon, women luxuriate as lotions, oils and creams are applied to their ebony skins. In classic “makeover” fashion, their faces are cleansed, scrubbed and buffed.


Te salon itself has had a makeover, and the container has been fitted inside with the necessary equipment. Te exterior has been attractively decorated with a brightly coloured mural, and an awning has been fixed above the door with two plants in terracotta pots on either side of the entrance.


Tis venture, which is different from other image-improvement businesses in the township, has been backed by a large cosmetic house. Te Soweto boutique was the idea of the company’s sales manager, Sandile Ndlovu, whose wife trained as a beauty consultant with the cosmetic company. He was impressed by her self-confident manner, and the natural flair she demonstrated when she learnt about business management.


Ndlovu felt that many black women could learn from the experience, but he felt that the whole project needed to be taken to the township. Te company agreed that there was a gap in the market for franchising the beauty salons to township entrepreneurs. Although Soweto is the first township franchise operation, other townships have been targeted.


Te franchise process enables a transfer of skills to take place. Tat is, the beauty company trains consultants who may themselves later open their own franchises. Naturally there will also be increased employment opportunities from the project.


Tere will also be beneficial boost to esteem that the empowerment of the women involved will bring to an environment to which women are oſten treated as second-class citizens.


Te outside of the container salon and shop is colourful and bold and advertises the cosmetic house’s products. On the shelves inside, vivid red lipsticks are displayed next to brilliant nail polished which glow in the dark. Two impeccably dressed saleswomen in chic uniforms wait behind the open counter to demonstrate their products to passer-by.


One section of the container shop houses the beauty salon, while the other half acts as the administration area where sales are monitored and stocks are ordered. Te cosmetic company hopes to attract both beauty consultants and clients who have not been approached by their network of home demonstrations and salespeople.


In the past, beauty products were targeted to the “white” market, and it has not been easy to cross the cultural barrier. Te closest thing some black women have seen to a face pack is a mud mask applied to Xhosa female songomas in training. However, the cosmetic company’s marketing appeal is based on the fact that its products are designed for local climatic conditions.


Te cosmetic company is not only training black women in skin care, it is teaching black women to be proud of their skin colour and to look aſter their skins.
